[Leonard Bernstein (1918.8.25-1990.10.14) was a star conductor who shared popularity with Karajan in the 20th century.) His passionate, emotionally charged, and soulful performances drew the sympathies of many, and he was loved by many with a charismatic following. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth, 50 titles are being released in a limited edition with UHQCD, green color label coating, and specifications that focus on sound quality. Mahler’s Eighth is an anomalous symphony in the style of a cantata, a large-scale work that conveys a romantic lyricism and an earnest appeal to the human heart that wells up from within. Known as the “Symphony of a Thousand” because of the large number of players and singers required to perform it, Bernstein’s second recording of Mahler’s complete symphonies died suddenly in 1990, so a broadcast recording from the Salzburg Festival in 1975 was released. The Adagio from the unfinished 10th is also included. Special program for DG’s 120th anniversary [Performances] Margaret Price (soprano I, Woman of Sin), Judith Bregen (soprano II, Woman of Atonement), Gerti Zoemer (soprano III, Virgin of Glory), Trudeliese Schmidt (alto I, Samaritan), Agnes Baltza (Alto II, Mary of Egypt), Kenneth Riegel (tenor, Doctor of Marian Adoration), Hermann Pry (baritone, Father of the Eucharist), Jose van Dam (bass, Father of Meditation), Vienna State Opera Chorus (Chorus Director: Walter Hagen =Vienna State Opera Choir (Chorus Conductor: Walter Hagen-Groll), Vienna Musikverein Choir (Chorus Conductor: Helmut Froschauer), Vienna Boys Choir (Chorus Conductor: Uwe Teimer), Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Conductor: Leonard Bernstein Recorded: October 1974 Vienna (2) (live recording), August 1975 August 1975 Salzburg (1) (live recording)
