[The “Songs of Spring,” with its elegant atmosphere created by the skillful use of ornamented notes, and the “Venetian Boat Song,” characterized by the rhythmic accompaniment form characteristic of boat songs, are among the most well-known works of Mendelssohn’s piano repertoire. The eight-volume “Silent Songs,” 48 pieces in all, which Mendelssohn wrote from time to time with familiar song-like melodies, are representative of the piano pieces found in the early Romantic period. In this album of 22 pieces from these works, Schiff gives a moderate and fresh performance that expresses the lyrical qualities in their purest form.
