A masterpiece accidentally created by the Corona disaster! Asa Tone is a multinational music project by Melati Malay, a Jakarta native and member of Young Magic (Carpark), Tristan Arp, a multimedia artist and founder of Human Pitch, and Kaazi, an anonymous project that has released on 100% silk. Asa Tone’s debut album “Temporary Music”, recorded in 10 days in a hypothetical studio in the jungle of Jakarta and released in early 2020 on Leaving Records, has been widely acclaimed and was named one of the “Best Albums of 2020” by Music Magazine. The long-awaited new album is now available, and is still a long seller, ranking #4 in Music Magazine’s “Best Albums 2020” list of electronic music. This is a stereo document of a remote digital 32-channel performance commissioned by Yu Su for Vancouver’s New Forms Festival and produced during the blockade and quarantine of the city due to the Corona disaster. This is a rare work that was produced accidentally due to the corona disaster. This work was originally commissioned by Yu Su, electronic music producer and curator of the aforementioned festival, who released a great album on Music From Memory last year, as an inherent work for the “New Forms Festival” event in Vancouver in 2020. Commissioned by Yu Su, curator of the aforementioned festival, Asa Tone decided to collaborate from a state of quarantine due to the Corona disaster, and introduced a new approach based on indeterminacy and contingency. Members individually recorded a pool of loops and field recordings that were generated in real time in lieu of actual “songs” to be played, while adhering to general tempo and key parameters. Responding to their respective blockade environments of Mexico City, New York City, and the Australian rainforest, Asa Tone constructed and completed a non-stop 30-minute piece via Zoom on this web of non-linear possibilities. This was later spatialized by Yu Su via a 4D sound/32 channel audio system at Lobe Studio in Vancouver.(The installation is accompanied by a custom modular video piece by artist Nika Milano, which aired on August 2, 2020, along with performances by Helen Michelle Mackenzie and Khotin, among others. The layered, three-dimensional, psychedelic soundscapes fuse seamlessly with simple yet tribal rhythms and pleasing ambience. The music is a seamless blend of three-dimensional, layered, psychedelic soundscapes, simple yet tribal rhythms, and pleasant ambience, and it draws you in with its gamelan, ambient, minimalist, techno, and new age cross over aspects that are undeniably compelling. This lengthy recording is a stereo document of Asa Tone’s remote digital 32-channel performance at New Forms, a rare and accidental product of the Corona Disaster.
