Dresden is proud of its tradition and prestige, and Schumann is proud of his innovation. Christian Thielemann, who doubles as Principal Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden and General Music Director of the Salzburg Easter Festival, is considered a world master of German music in both name and reality. He started 2019 with a critically acclaimed first appearance conducting the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert with his superb music-making, and now, in his second Sony Classical release of 2019, he celebrates his 60th birthday on April 1 with a release of Schumann: The Complete Symphonies with his Hand Guard. Moreover, this is a live recording of two concerts at Tokyo Suntory Hall, the final stop on an Asian tour that took place in Beijing, Guangzhou, and Macau in October and November 2018. Performed in numbered order, the bold and individualistic interpretations, described as “bold, gale-force, and furious,” can be enjoyed in excellent sound quality.
