[The “Hungarian Dances,” based on the music of gypsies and peasants collected by Brahms during his travels in Hungary, is a folkloric work for piano accompaniment that has become more widely popular through orchestral arrangements by Brahms and Dvořák. The Vienna Philharmonic responded to Abbado’s consistent approach to conducting, with no exaggeration of tempo, deft orchestral control, and a consistent approach, and the orchestra gave a lively, heartrending performance that made full use of the richness of its sound.
