Description

Julius Hemphill’s Dogon A.D. stands as one of the defining statements of early-70s creative jazz: self-directed, unhurried and resolutely its own thing. Recorded for his own Mbari imprint, the album presents a classic quartet on paper but something far less predictable in sound.

Hemphill leads on alto saxophone and flute, joined by Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Abdul Wadud on cello and Phillip Wilson on drums. Rather than following conventional jazz roles, the group stretches time, rhythm and texture, allowing the music to move at its own deliberate pace. The title piece anchors the album, unfolding over an extended duration that balances groove with abstraction, turning an uneven rhythmic cycle into something deeply physical and strangely hypnotic.

Wadud’s cello brings a raw, blues-rooted presence, locking into mantra-like figures that underpin Hemphill’s long-form improvisation, while Carroll and Wilson push and pull against the pulse. The result feels simultaneously grounded and unsettled, full of honked dissonance, rough-edged beauty and patient momentum.

Neither polite nor showy, Dogon A.D. remains a powerful example of jazz that trusts its instincts, taking the long route and finding its strength in the journey itself.
