The Goldring Ethos SE MC Phono Cartridge has been releases as a special edition to the well respected Ethos MC Phono Cartridge.
The Goldring Ethos SE MC Phono Cartridge is now the flagship model, with new pure silver coils, that have a higher conductivity.
This is designed to lower the tip mass for improved tracking and transient response. Additionally, a low-mass cross-armature core is used. The design aims to improve channel separation.
Bespoke diamond stylus
The Goldring Ethos SE MC Phono Cartridge boasts a narrow, low-mass tip. This has a broad contact area that is designed to elicit an enhanced frequency response.
The tip also reduces distortion and colouration. Moreover, the body is made of aircraft-grade aluminium for low mass and high rigidity.
There are also newly designed pole shoes that are designed to extend the frequency response. The tip is 0.3 x 0.7mm and is not replaceable. However, Goldring offers a re-tip service.
Goldring cartridges
The Goldring cartridge range begins with the E3 model which is under £100. While the E4 sits at around £199.
The Goldring Ethos SE MC Phono Cartridge is over £1000 and is designed to offer premium performance with high-end turntables.
About cartridge types
Most budget turntables come with moving magnet cartridges. These have a relatively high output of around 5mV and an impedance of 47K.
The cantilever that holds the stylus, has a tiny magnet mounted on it. This sits inside two coils that retrieve the audio information.
However, the mass is quite high and this can affect the tracking and high-frequency response.
Therefore the Goldring Ethos SE MC Phono Cartridge has the coils mounted onto the cantilever. The coils are also made of silver which has a lower resistance than copper.
However, the output of a moving coil cartridge is much lower at often less than 1mV. As a result, a special type of preamp is needed.
Phono preamp requirements
The output of the Goldring Ethos SE MC Phono Cartridge is only 500 microvolts. This needs a good phono preamp for optimal performance.
High-end amplifiers will have an MC/MM switch. However top-of-the-line preamps will have many other settings.
This type of preamp usually has gain and impedance settings that can be used to provide an optimal match with the cartridge.
The impedance of MC cartridges can vary more than with MM cartridges. Another issue with low-output cartridges is noise pickup. As a result, high-end preamps will have balanced connectors to reduce noise pickup from the leads.
