Boris Tchaikovsky represents the modern and contemporary Russian music world of the 20th century. He studied piano with Oborin and composition with Shevarine and Shostakovich at the Moscow Conservatory, and is known as one of the composers of the “next generation of Shostakovich. However, his music was not appreciated at all in the U.S. after the war, and his close friend and cellist Rostropovich, who could not stand the sight of him, actively introduced his works, but even so, his reputation did not change very much. Tchaikovsky was deeply grateful to Rostropovich and dedicated the “Suite for Solo Cello” and the fantastically beautiful “Cello Sonata” included in this album. Tchaikovsky’s reputation has only grown in the 21st century, largely due to Rostropovich’s understanding and contributions. The Piano Trio, premiered in 1956 with the composer’s own piano, Pikaizen’s violin, and Altman’s cello, is a lucid work in the baroque style for which the young composer received great acclaim.Naxos Japan
