Born in Novgorod, Russia, Igor Levit’s fourth album in three years is titled Life. This two-disc set expresses the deep sense of loss, grief, despair, and comfort that Levitt felt after the tragic death of a close friend. Nine pieces have been selected for their dark grandeur and melancholy beauty. Poetic moments of quiet contemplation will eventually bring the listener affirmation and sensuality of life. The selections span an extremely wide range of eras, from Bach to modern composer Jefsky to the works of jazz pianist Bill Evans. Life” easily crosses the boundaries of time, style, and genre, offering numerous new discoveries. A collection of works that further blossoms the personality and enormous curiosity of a 31-year-old artist who has established his career with brilliant performances of Bach’s and Beethoven’s greatest works.
