The “boat song” is said to have originated from a Venetian gondola rowing song. A melancholy melody is sung over a “slow rhythm” that represents the waves. Among the Romantic composers, Fauré was particularly fond of this form, and left 13 “boat songs” for piano alone. Nos. 1 to 13 were written almost throughout Fauré’s entire life, from the plaintive pieces of his early years to the mysterious pieces of his later years, and are performed by German pianist Michael Endres, who specializes in Schubert and Ravel.Naxos Japan
