A composer active in Armenia and Georgia (formerly Georgia), Balkhdarian is known for his many small pieces for piano. The pieces are all influenced by folk music and are colorful and lively. The “Oriental Dance” with its exotic and attractive melody and the “12 Armenian Dances” full of jumpy rhythms are characteristic of Balkhdarian. Hailapetian was born in Yerevan, Armenia. His repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary music, but he is particularly enthusiastic about introducing works from around his home country, and has recorded many unique works for the GRANDPIANO label.
