For their latest album ‘Dark Matter’, Pearl Jam have worked with superproducer Andrew Watt who applies modern elements to a heritage sound. Focusing on melody & foregrounds he trims the fat while echoing Pearl Jam’s first two hits, ‘Ten’ and ‘Vs’. There’s little on ‘Dark Matter’ to enchant gen Z away from their own heroes, instead you get Vedder’s distinctive holler and the band’s beefiness; that guys-in-a-room energy percolating throughout the album. With amazing longevity this grunge-era band arrive in their 35th year largely intact and on the right side of history.
