The Vienna Philharmonic, the world’s premier orchestra, celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1992, and held a commemorative concert at its home base, the Musikvereinsaal, on March 22. The conductor for this important concert was the renowned Italian conductor Riccardo Muti, with whom the Philharmonic has enjoyed a strong relationship of trust for over 20 years in both opera and orchestral concerts. In 2021, Muti will take the podium for the sixth time for the Vienna Philharmonic’s “New Year’s Concert,” which is held every year on New Year’s Day. Beginning with Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, the Vienna Philharmonic will perform Mahler’s Rückertlieder with renowned German mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig, Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony, and conclude the concert with Ravel’s Bolero. This is the first CD release of this historic concert in which all orchestra members took turns performing. Remastered by b-sharp in Berlin from Sony Classical’s LD master. Commemorative disc for the concert in Japan.
