:
Sol Gabetta is a cellist so talented and popular that he is now considered a modern-day Jacqueline du Pré. This album features two cello concertos, Elgar and Martinů, recorded live in 2014. Moreover, the orchestra is the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (Sol Gabetta’s first time performing with them). Sol Gabetta had already recorded Elgar’s Cello Concerto with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Venzago in 2009 to very high acclaim, but this time with Rattle & the Berlin Philharmonic. The veteran Rattle provides excellent support for Sol’s romantic and passionate cello, which is perfectly suited to the character of this work. This is probably also the first recording of Elgar’s cello concerto for the Berlin Philharmonic. Martineau is a live subscription concert of the talented Urbanski’s debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker the month after Elgar. This concerto, which combines Czech national music and 20th century musical idioms, is performed with a superbly expressive performance of deep lyricism. ■Blu-spec CD2 / Year of recording: April, May 2014 / Location: Baden-Baden Festival Theater, Berlin, Philharmonie
