The Welsh String Quartet’s fourth Beethoven release, a collection of early and mid-period masterpieces, is a collection of “music that reveals its structure and inspires great discovery and emotion”. The third collection (FOCD9812), which includes masterpieces from the early and middle periods, was acclaimed for “unflinchingly revealing the structure of the music and evoking great discovery and emotion in the listener. In 2020, the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, the fourth collection marks the halfway point in the recording of the complete works, and includes the classically lucid No. 5, as well as No. 15, Beethoven’s greatest masterpiece. The 80-minute recording begins and ends in A major – a masterful performance, full of delicate expression and daring incision, based on the most transparent sound ever. From the recording at the Corona Disaster, Welsh “sacred songs of thanksgiving” can be heard. The liner notes were written by Tatsuya Yabe. The CD is a moving account of a musician whose “heart was stopped” by the declaration of the state of emergency, and how he sings “songs of gratitude” to a “new power” through this CD.
