Following the critically acclaimed recording of the complete Rachmaninoff piano concertos with Daniil Trifonov as soloist, the Philadelphia Orchestra and its music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin have embarked on a recording of the complete symphonies by Rachmaninoff. This is the latest recording by the orchestra most suited to Rachmaninoff’s works. Included are Symphony No. 1, one of Rachmaninoff’s earliest works, and Symphonic Dances, his last work, dedicated to the Philadelphia Orchestra and its then music director, Ormandy. The premiere of Symphony No. 1 in 1897 was such a disaster that Rachmaninoff was so shocked that he was unable to compose for some time, and the piece was never performed during his lifetime, but it became known worldwide in 1948 when Ormandy performed it with the Philadelphia Orchestra.Meanwhile, the “Symphonic Dances” have been well received since their premiere in 1941 by the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Ormandy. The complete symphonic cycle will be completed with a second release in 2022 and a third release in 2023 to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Rachmaninoff’s birth.
