Tower Records “Sony Classical” Special Selection 9th season. As a “special project commemorating the 30th anniversary of Eugene Ormandy’s death,” Tower Records will release 10 titles from the vast amount of recordings Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra made for Sony Classical and RCA, including the quintessential stereo recordings. The rich orchestral sound of the Philadelphia Orchestra, with its thick string section at its core, flawless woodwinds, and beautiful brass, has been preserved, and the orchestra’s peak of 20th century orchestral art, from the 1950s and 60s, when it was full of vigor, to the 70s, when it grew in maturity and depth, has been beautifully engraved. As the title suggests, this album is a compilation of works that bring the charm of stringed instruments to the forefront. Ormandy, who was also an accomplished violinist, placed the foundation of the orchestra’s sound in the string parts, and was thoroughly particular about bowing and phrasing. These pieces, filled with romantic songs, are truly the essence of this compilation. Year of recording: 1957-1966
