Viana da Motta, whose father was a music lover, showed musical talent from an early age. she studied piano and composition at the Conservatory of Lisbon from 1875 to 1881, and the following year she went to Berlin to study. She is known to have been the last high student of Franz Liszt. After dominating the world as a pianist, he returned to Portugal, where he composed many works combining traditional Portuguese music and modern styles while serving as director of the Lisbon State Conservatory. This album includes “Two Piano Pieces with Becklin” and “Fantastic Pieces” in the style of late German Romanticism, and “Five Rhapsodies” in the Portuguese tradition.
