The eighth Bruckner Cycle with Paavo Järvi and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra is the masterpiece No. 3, which concludes his early creative career. The work was originally dedicated to Wagner, whom Järvi admired greatly, and it is a long work that includes quotations from “Die Walküre” and “Tristan”. Järvi uses the most commonly performed version of the work today, the 1889 third draft, which Bruckner began after completing the first draft of Symphony No. 8. Although Bruckner’s symphonies have the image of being performed masterfully only by experienced and elderly conductors, Järvi uses a faster tempo to bring the music to life and present Bruckner’s characteristic huge block structure with clarity, while elaborating on the details. Järvi had performed and recorded this symphony at the beginning of the Frankfurt cycle, but was not satisfied with the performance and recorded it live when he took it up again. (C)RS
