Description
Ami Taf Ra is a Los Angeles-based artist of North African heritage whose music explores the intersections of Arabic tradition, jazz, and gospel. Her album The Prophet and The Madman is a bold, cinematic interpretation of the work of Lebanese-American poet and artist Khalil Gibran.
Composed, produced, and arranged in collaboration with saxophonist Kamasi Washington, the album draws on Moroccan gnawa, spiritual jazz, and sweeping orchestral arrangements. The lineup features a host of Washington’s close collaborators, including Ryan Porter, Miles Mosley, Brandon Coleman, Tony Austin, Cameron Graves, Ronald Bruner Jr., Allakoi Peete, and Kahlil Cummings.
Infused with a deep sense of reverence and resistance, The Prophet and The Madman bridges past and present through devotional grooves, ecstatic improvisation, and a grand, spiritual sweep.
