This is a new recording of the work that Bernstein himself said was “the very essence of me” and is now available in its anniversary year! Commissioned in 1971 for the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., the work, subtitled “A Theater Piece for Singers, Performers, and Dancers,” is a massive work involving an orchestra, chorus, children’s chorus, 18 solo singers, rock band, blues band, and dancers, totaling 200 members. Therefore, although it is one of Bernstein’s masterpieces, it is a fantastic work that has not had a chance to be performed.
